Checked Baggage
Checked baggage is defined as the baggage that passengers may check-in with Air China to be transported to the flight destination. When checking bags, a baggage tag should be issued.
Checked baggage packaging
The checked baggage should be packed and fastened properly. It should be able to endure some pressure, and can be unloaded and transported safely under normal operating conditions. It also should abide by the following conditions:
- Travel box, travel bag and handbag should be locked to avoid theft.
- More than two bags cannot be bundled into one.
- Additional articles should not be inserted in the baggage.
- Bamboo baskets, net bags, ropes, straw bags, plastic bags cannot be wrapped around the baggage.
- Passengers name, detailed address, and phone number should be written inside and outside the baggage.
Articles that can not be transported as checked baggage
The following items should not be packed in checked baggage. If a loss of these items occurs due to a passenger breach, Air China will not be held liable and will only compensate lost baggage according to lost baggage policies.
- Important or Commercial documents
- Securities
- Currency
- Bank Draft
- Jewelry
- Valuable metal and metalwork
- Curio, calligraphy and paintings
- Fragile articles
- Perishable articles
- Samples
Limitation of checked baggage weight and volume
Maximum weight of each baggage should not exceed 32kg, and the maximum dimension should not exceed 100×60×40cm3. The baggage exceeding the above allowance should be transported as freight.
For domestic flights and international flights between Europe and China, passengers holding adult-fare or child-fare tickets are entitled to a free baggage allowance of 40kg for first class, 30kg for business class and 20kg for economy class. On flights between Madrid and Sao Paolo passengers holding adult-fare or child-fare tickets can check in two pieces of baggage free of charge, the weight allowance for each piece is 23 kg in economy class, 32 kg in business and first class.
Children aged two years and over are entitled the same free baggage allowance as adults.
Handicapped passengers can take a wheelchair and/or walking aids.

Air China Platinum Card Members:
- Entitled to 30 kilos’ worth of free baggage allowance above the normal
Air China Gold, and Silver Card Members:
- Entitled to 20 kilos’ worth of free baggage allowance above the normal
Star Alliance Gold Card Members Baggage Allowance
- Entitled to 20 kilos’ worth of free baggage allowance above the normal
Additional information:
- When passengers are connecting flights, this baggage policy applies for any domestic segments that are in conjunction with international segments.
- Passengers taking code-share flights with Air China and other carriers, please refer to the checked baggage policy of the operating carrier
Please note: These regulations apply only to flights from/to Europe.
